Playing NCAA Athletics is a privilege, not a right. You must be willing to put in the work on and off the field. A lot of times student athletes believe that their sport trumps academics, and that is entirely false. Student comes first in student-athlete, and the University will still hold you to the same standard as every other student, and in most cases even to a higher level.

Making sure youre staying on top of your academics in high school and are communicating with your counselor is KEY. Counselors have resources that can make organizing your college work easier. If you fail to pay attention to details, you can end up like my buddy, who missed out on being eligible for colligate sports, for an entire year.

He had a 4.0 GPA!

Youre probably asking, how is this possible, he had a 4.0 GPA?

My friend did exactly what you shouldnt do; if you want to play sports in college and that is NOT paying attention to the details. Have you heard of the NCAA Eligibility Center? (Formerly known as NCAA Clearinghouse) If not, the NCAA Eligibility Center is a curriculum you must follow in order to be eligible for participation at the collegiate level. My buddy thought that as long as he got good grades, he wouldnt have any problems.

He was wrong, and this is a mistake many kids in the college soccer recruiting process fall victim to. He decided to take a lot of elective classes, and classes that were not up to the NCAAs guidelines and regulations. He never built a relationship with his high school counselor, and never expressed to his counselor his desire to play sports in college. He ended up not getting to attend his top choice school and having to do a year of Community College, to pass the eligibility centers regulations.
